ELEPHANT WAS DRUNK

NEW YORK, Jan. 14. Virginia, an elephant, was drunk when she arrived at Boston.

Louis Reed, who had charge of ''Virginia and a shipload of other animals consigned from Calcutta to a circus in Texas, admitted she was drunk.

Reed explained that Virginia and eight other elephants aboard had been given medicinal draughts of liquor to ward off chills in the icy North Atlantic.

“We gave them all a slug of rum,.” Reed said. “Virginia downed a quart and then just keeled over.”
