Blazing Airliner Explodes in California with 32 Fatalities
NEW YORK, Jan. 28. All aboard were killed x Y h ® n a D.C.3. airlmer, carrying 28 Mexicans, ar. immigration service, guard and three of a crew crashed in flames m the western country California toplane, which was owned by Airline Transport Carriers (Inc.) was on a chartered flight from Oakland airport to Burbank and isl Centro, California. „ . . , The U.S. Immigration Service had chartered the plane to take the Mexicans to the El Centro deportation centre because they had either entered the United States illegally or staved beyond the duration of then agficultural work contracts. An eye-witness said the right engine caught lire as the plane was 1500 feet above the ground. The right wing crumpled almost immediately and dropped off, causing the aircraft to spin earthwards. The petrol tanks exploded just before the plane hit the ground and became a mass of flames. A county sheriff’s office reported that at least 26 bodies have been recovered so far.
