PATRIOTIC COUNCIL

WESTLAND COUNCIL MEETS

Mr. A. R. Elcock presided over the .ordinary meeting of the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council at Greymouth last Evening. Also present were Mrs F. W. Shal crass, Messrs F. A. Kitchingham, J. A. Murdocn, J. Smeaton, F. H. Denton, J. W. Greenslade A. B. Spires, K. O. May, J. B. Kent,' E. W. Kennedy, J. Unwin, T. E. Coates, W. Green, R. Kelleher and the Secretary (Mr. D. J. Evans). Letters on a number of matters were received from the National Patriotic Fund Board. It advised that goods for 966 parcels were on order. An explanation was also made of a discrepancy in the price of certain goods in an account winch had been referred to the Board for attention.

Details were given of wool on order for the year, in monthly instalments, the Westland allocation being 96 lbs of khaki and 15 lbs of navy. The Secretary (Mr. Evans) said that there was a good stock of wool on hand at, Hokitika. The Board further stated that 18,000 Armv hussifs were- required and that the/ Westland quota was 320. , , Advice was received that Nestles products would be supplied as soon as shipping was available. (Proposals were submitted tor a lecture tour by Mr. Frank Clune of the Australian Comforts Fund. The Secretary said that he had referred the matter to committees but tney had turned it down. He remarked that Mr. Clune was a very breezy writer.

Commenting on a circular regarding refunds available for freight charges for carriage by road, rail, or sea, and local cartage and wharfage charges, the Secretary said that he had forwarded one application for a refund. New Zealand Breweries Ltd., wrote stating that they were donating £luUl) to the All-Purposes Appeal and forwarding £5O as the local share of this donation.

Hannah and Co. Hokitika, forwarded £2O to the fund. The Joint Council of the Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John wrote "reporting on its work in Egypt in February and March. The Society said that the Joint Council wished to have a period reserved for its appeals for the prisoners of war and sick and wounded funds. The Hokitika Committee had set the month of July aside and would not conduct any special activities during 'that period.On the motion of Mr. Murdoch the meeting then went into- committee. The financial statement showed that receipts for April had amounted to £BB9 2s 9d, made up as,follows: — Hokitika Savings Bank, £10; Hokitika Committee, £76 9s 4d; Greymout h Committee, £254 5s sd; Ross W..L. parcels. £2; Brunner Committee, 3s: Runanga Committee, £l6 11s; inangahua Committee. £ll 13s 3d; Interest on deposits, £54 5s 7d; N.z. A statement of conl.i’ibutions towards the levy of £13,000 showed that these now totalled £7,088 6s sa. It was decided to forward £1,382 towards payment of the National Bevy of £9,382 leaving a balance of £5,000. The Council had before it a letter from the National Board inviting early payment of the levy to meet accumulated: accounts.
