OVER 1100 SHIPS And 60,000 Aircraft [Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK. June 1. The United States Director of War Mobilisation, Mr. Byrnes, has disclosed that more than one thousand ocean-going cargo ships, and almost one hundred tankers, have been built in the United States in the past twelve months as compared with fifty ships and twenty,-two tankers during the previous year. Mr. Byrnes said that sixty thousand planes have been built in the same period, as compared with 10143 planes in the previous year. Mr. Byrnes said that despite some stoppages of work in war industries, the great mass of workers and ot labour leaders were doing their utmost to prevent interruptions. Only one twentieth of one per cent, of the war workers time was lost through strikes during 1942. He added: “Many attacks and many front lines lie ahead. we are just entering upon the critical period of the war. I pledge myself to try to achieve the same co-ordination in the efforts in our civilian Government that exists on our military fronts.”
