N.Z. TO CONTRIBUTE £2OOO ANNUALLY.

P.A. WELLINGTON, June 1. The -Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, announced to-day, that the New Zealand Government had agreed to make an annual contribution of £2,000 to the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva. This contribution is intended to assist the Committee in meeting the very heavy expenditure involved in serving the interests of the prisoners of war. Mr. Eraser said that the New Zealand Government was deeply appreciative of work of the committee on behalf of New Zealanders and they welcomed the opportunity;, which the payment afforded them, of showing a tangible manner their high regard for the splendid work done. The President of the Committee, in acknowledging the contribution, said that it came when expenditure was steadily 1 increasing and was a moral as well as a material encouragement,

The Blaketown Women’s Institute spent a most enjoyable evening recently in games and dancing when they 'held their fourth birthday party. The president (Mr s Mann) welcomed members from the Dobson, Runanga, Barrytown and Grevmouth Institutes. All wished the Blaketown Institute every success in the future. While the candles on the cake were being Jit and blown out by the eldest member (Mrs Templeton), one verse of the Institute’s song was sung, ine cake was made by iced by Mrs Malloy. The president presented shoulder sprays to the retiring president, Mrs Morland, and retiring treasurer. Mrs Condon, the secretary, Mrs Mitchell, and co Mrs Templeton. Mrs Herring was presented with the points prize foi he year. A play, In the Black Out, was presented by members of the Institute. Those taking part veie Mesdames West, Inms, Lyons, Longstaff. Songs were given by Mrs Brown and Mis Innis. Winners ot competitions Were: “Telegram,” Mr L Smith; Whistling item. Miss McCann, Barrytown; Spot Waltz. Mr Price and Mrs Knapp; Austerity Waltz, Mrs Shand and Mrs Johnson; Monte Carlo. Mr Longstaff and Mrs Coll. The oil painting painted and decorated by Mrs Murphy, was won by Mi’s Maloney (Barrytown). Mrs Meade supplied the music and Mrs Murphy played extras.
