OKURU NOTES

lOur Own Correspondent.]

There was quite an enjoyable gathering at the Okurti Hall on the evening of Saturday, May 22, when a euchre tournament was held, and was followed by a dance. Visitors arrived per plane from Jackson Bay and by car and lorry from Waiatoto and Haast. During the evening a collection was taken up by Mr W. D. Nolan for the Westland patriotic fund, and it met with a willing response from all settlers and Public Works employees. A total sum of £37 8s was collected and forwarded to Mr D. J. Evans, secretary of the Westland Provincial Patriotic Council. It was unanimously decided to hold a similar function on the last Saturday evening of each month during the winter in aid of patriotic funds.

Mr and Mrs J. Kearney, of Ranfurly, who for the past fortnight, have been the gue'sts of the W. D. Nolan family, also attended. The welcome visitors were good sports and contributed largely to the success of the evening. Music was supplied by Mr D. J. Nolan (piano), assisted by Mr T. Ryan (piano-accordeon), and Mr E. Schofield ably officiated as M.C. While at Okuiu Mr and Mrs J. Kearney visited Jackson Bay, and Mr Kearney spent a few days at Nolan’s cattle ranch at the Cascade. They returned home via Haast Pass on horseback, expressing themselves delighted with their sojourn in southern Westland.
