U-BOAT LOSSES
FIVE IN TEN DAYS!
AIRMEN’S SUCCESSES.
RUGBY, May 30. The description of recent sinkings of five U-boats in ten days by aircraft of the Coastal Command, shows that in all five attacks the enemy attempted to give battle on the surface with their guns, and that not since the war began has there been such convincing proof of the power of air attack at sea. In most previous successful operations, depth charges shattered the enemy submarines after they submerged. Two destroyed in Icelandic waters were straddled by depth charges as theyv lay on the surface. Only one offered resistance.
Another U-boat was destroyed in the approaches of the Bay of Biscay. In this case, one of the Sutherlands had an airscrew hit by, a shell, but was not seriously damaged and was able to watch tne engagement between its companion flying-boat and the submarine. An Australian Sunderland sank another U-boat in the same area. The surface craft put up a fight though she was out of control. Other sinkings occurred in northern waters.
