Otago Murder Case RICHARDSON CHARGED. [Per Press Association]. DUNEDIN, September 22. Upon his discharge from hospital to-day, Arthur Richardson, 52, labourer, was charged with the murder of his wife, Jessie Richardson, in the home of their daughter, at Otokia, on July 17. Accused, it was alleged, shot his wife in the abdomen, from the open door of a bedroom, as she sat with her dying daughter. It was stated that accused previously had been an inmate of a mental institution. After the shooting, accused was found with a severe wound in the chest, he having turned a double barrelled gun on himself. After twelve witnesses were heard, accused pleaded not guilty, and was comm’tted for trial.
MOTOR DRIVERS IN COURT. WELLINGTON, September 22. Robert Tennyson Bell, a draper, was fined £2O by Mr. Mosley, for being intoxicated when in charge" of a car. Counsel said defendant to-day was completing his ninth year in a responsible position, and was moving to a more responsible one. A number of friends foregathered to congratulate him and although not a drinking man, he could not refuse to drink on this occasion. ■ “The only way to deal with these intoxication cases is to put the fear of the consequences into the minds of motorists”, said Mr. Mosley, who, giving full weight to the counsel’s statement, said he would not impose imprisonment. A charge against Kenneth Daniel Melvin. 37, engineer, is being heard before Mr. Mosley, S.M., of negligently driving a delivery truck on Moxhav Avenue, thereby causing the death of Charles Thomas Holden, on the evening of August 18. Evidence was given by Kenneth Albert Olsen, who was riding pillion on the deceased’s motor-cycle. In cross-examina-tion, he said he was 17 and three months, and deceased was 16. They had been cycling for nearly two hours before the accident. He was sure the light was going. The approaching vehicle looked as if it were going straight on, and not turn as it did.
