Miss Hester Nitschke, of Christchurch, is here on a short holiday visit. __ ~ Mesdames C. Coxall, A. Hardie (Reefton), W. Dent and Miss M. Dent (Westport), Messrs H. Gaskell and T. Flannigan (Nelson), were week-end visitors to the township. Dr. K. Brockenshire, who has been on annual holiday for the past few weeks, has returned home. Mrs. McKane, of Reefton, who has been spending a few days here as the guest of Mrs. J. Connors, has returned home.
Mr. L. W. Stephens (Director of School of Mines, Reefton), visited the township on Tuesday. Mr. W. P. Morgan, is making satisfactory progress while being an inmate of the Reefton Hospital. Upwards of 600 people attended the annual ball of the Waiuta Bachelors, held in the Miners’ Hall on Saturday evening last. Very great credit is due to the energetic committee, who were responsible for the arrangements. The hall was tastefully decorated with red and white streamers, and native fern. These, combined with the many beautiful gowns worn by the ladies, presented a wonderful picture. Messrs P. Flynn and V. Adams were in charge of the floor, while excellent music was supplied by Ron Stopforth’s Marina Dance Band. The supper was set out on the stage, and left nothing to be desired. During the evening an apology for absence was received from Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Humphries (Reefton), owing to illness. The lucky Monte Carlo was won by Mr. and Mrs. J. Rodden. Lucky One Steps were won by Mr. and Mrs. Bert Bainon (Blackwater), Mr. and Mrs. T. Coulson, Mr. Hec. Lines and Mrs. R Morrisey, Mr. Jim Young and Miss Muriel Myall. Extras were contributed oy Mesdames Ord, Randen, Crossman and Eklund (Reefton). The Bachelors desire to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the ladies who assisted them in the arrangements, especially to Mrs. M. Nohra, who rendered yeoman service in the kitchen. The 1937 effort of the Waiuta Bachelors will long be remembered as an outstanding social and financial success. A general meeting of the Waiuta branch of the Inangahua Gold and Coal Miners’ Union will be held in the Miners’ Hall on Saturday morning at 10.30, when all members are requested to attend. Miss Kath Kennedy, is spending a holiday in the township as the guest of Mrs. Nohra.
