GREY CLUB. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Greymouth Lawn Tennis Club took place last evening, the President, Dr. H. S. Ray, presiding over twenty-three members who attended. The annual report and balance sheet were read and confirmed. The following report was presented at the annual meeting of the Greymouth Lawn Tennis Club held last evening:—The season was opened on November 7 with a Yankee tournament, the winners being Mrs Fuller and Mrs Cheyne. The season was very disappointing, owing to the phenomenally bad weather experienced throughout, and this was reflected by a decrease in the membership. Comparisons of the membership with the previous year were:—l936-37: 19 men, 29 ladies, 4 juniors; 1935-36: 28 men and 37 ladies. The top-dressing of the courts was carried out before the season opened and here, again, the wet weather seriously hampered the work. However, the job was an excellent one, and any water blisters which have appeared since the end of the season will be rolled out.
The club experienced a very successful season in inter-club matches, defeating United and Runanga twice and losing once to United. The men’s team were defeated by Hokitika in the first challenge for the Presidential trophy, but were successful in regaining the trophy from United later in the season. A large number of members competed in the Sub-Associa-tion’s Easter tournament,' and Mrs Wilkins and R. Armstrong won the combined championship. A large number of ladder matches were played during the season, and we hope the same interest will be maintained this season. Since the close of the season we have lost one of the members of our ladies’ A team, Mrs Fuller having left the district, but we realise that our loss, is someone else’s gain. In conclusion, I wish to thank all members of the retiring committee for their assistance and co-operation during the season. I also wish to thank the Press for the splendid manner in which they have reported our activities.
