RUGBY FOOTBALL

WEST COAST UNION. Mr J. Guy presided at the weekly meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union last evening, when there were also present Messrs F. Eggleton, J. Kyle, J. Cornish, T. O’Donnell, W. Williams, F. W. Baillie, A. M. Jamieson, T. P. Ryan and the secretary . (My O. McLean). Mr Williams reported that the Coast team had a good trip to Christchurch, there being no trouble in any way. In the first spell they were unlucky to miss two tries, whilst both sides improved in the second spell. 'l'he Coast tackling was outstanding and he had never seen its equal. A draw would have been a good indication of the game. The /linner was very successful, and the hotel proprietor asked him to convey to the Union his congratulations on their conduct.

Mr Williams was thanked for his report, and it was decided to thank the Canterbury Union and Messrs Todd and Griffiths (Storey’s Hotel) for their hospitality. The Plunket Society wrote stating that £4 5s had been raised from the sale of the Springboks’ autographs, and thanked the Union for its assistance. Star Club advised that its juniors defaulted to Kumara because of the break-down of a car. Cobden Club advised that owing to having only ten players available they were unable to fulfil their fixture against Celtic. Mr Ryan, moving that the explanations be accepted said that the whole trouble was “Springbok-itis.” Mr Kyle seconded the motion. Mr Eggleton said that both explanations were very vague and he would like the Union to request proper reasons for the defaults. The chairman: It is too late in the season now. Mr Eggleton: It will show the boys what view we take in the matter. The motion was carried. Star Club wrote regarding the abandonment of the Citizen’s Shield competition in which they and Cobden were leading, and requested that the Union reconsider its previous decision.

The chairman said that in view of the fact that the competition had! been abandoned on account of the! lateness of the season, he did not think any action could be taken. It was decided to take no action. The Greymouth Women’s Institute wrote asking the Union to support its request for proper facilities for a women’s rest room in Greymouth, and that the Union write to the Borough Council on the matter. Mr Ryan said that the matter certainly appeared to require some at' tention. If all societies and organisations clubbed together as they should do, and supported the request, something would be done. Mr Eggleton said that the Union could write to the Borough Council as requested. Mr Ryan moved that a letter be forwarded to Borough Council, drawing attention to the necessity for a rest room. The motion was seconded by Mr Cornish and carried.

Mr Cornish moved that it be a recommendation to the incoming management committee that a remit be forwarded for the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union asking that timekeepers be appointed for all matches. Mr Baillie seconded the motion, stating that it was very difficult for referees to- keep the time as well as control games. Mr Jamieson: It’s practically impossible. The recommendation was adopted. Mr O’Donnell moved that a recommendation be made in favour of a remit that the referee in all matches

place the ball in the scrum. He sar that the Springboks had never pu the ball in properly. Mr Ryan said that such a rul would have to be forwarded on t England before it could be adopted. The recommendation was adoptee Mr Ryan moved that the secretary procure all trophies and present : report on them to the next meeting There were, he said, many trophies which had been lost sight of in re cent years. Mr Baillie seconded the motio: 1 which was carried. Mr Ryan moved that no fixture, be played next Saturday on accoun of the Test match.
