SPORTING

Racing Notes Merry Ruler: Merry Ruler, by Chief Ruler from Merry Twinkle, has joined W. Pine's learn'at Awapuni. This gelding, who won as a two-year-old, has been off the scene for some time. Wotan: It is reported from Australia that Wotan has been supported for the Melbourne Cup, and has been coupled with Talking for the Caulfield Cup. Waitaka: Waitaka, a winner last month, at the Grand National Meeting, is an improver with prospects of doing well, even if he is not quite up to the New Zealand Cup standard, a race in which he has an engagement. Narrator: The Lysander three-year-old Narrator, has been on the easy list since racing, but will soon be set going again for the Labour Day racing. Masterton Programme: Whereas the Masterton Racing Club’s open short events at the October meeting last year were run over seven furlongs, next month’s contests have been reduced to six furlongs each day. Another alteration is that

the highweight handicap on the second day has been reduced from a mile and a-quarter to one mile, the same distance as on the opening day. It was previously stated that the original distances of the sprint and highweight events would be maintained so far as the second day’s programme is concerned. Colonel Grattan: Colonel Grattan will probably have his next outing in one of the lightharness events to be decided at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting next week. He should be improved for his outing at the recent New Brighton meeting, and it will not be long before he is displaying the ability which brought him into the limelight late last season.

True Shaft: True Shaft broke a bone in a hock during the running of the Gonville Hurdles at Wanganui, so it looks as though his racing days are ended. Slippery was lame after contesting the Seatield Handicap on the first day of the Wanganui meeting, but he was left in the Robinson Handicap at Foxton.

Trotting Notes The New Zealand Cup: Horses eligible for the New Zealand Cup include Pot Luck, Lucky Jack, Reporter, Gamble, Tempest, Bingen Palm, Glenrossie, on scratch; King’s Warrior, Bonny Azure, Graham Direct, Cloudy Range, Key Spec, Rollo, Evicus, War Buoy, Willow Wave, and Worthy Light, on 12 yards; Blue Mountain, De Soto and Satin King, on 24 yards; Grand Mogul, on 36 yards; Red Shadow, on 48 yajds; and Indianapolis and Roi I’Or, on 72 yards (says the Timaru Herald). This makes a list of 24 exclusive of any Australian horses that may be' nominated. Unless there are a good many breakdowns the committee of the Metropolitan Trotting Club has an awkward ‘ask to »nce. Attracted Attention:

A novice that attracted attention at the Hutt Park fixture was Sewana, who competed in the Sharpe Handicap. He was very slow to begin and was a good wav from the leaders half a mile from home. However, he then began to put in some good work on the outside and came home strongly in fifth place. The race is sure to do him a lot of good. Although he is a five-year-old, he has only had two starts, owing to heir unlucky in suffering slight, accidents that have necessitated his being eased in his work. Sewana is a halfbrother to that briliant performer Roi I’Or being by Rey de Oro from Gold Queen. Three-year-old Supremacy: The Wellington Stakes, run at Hutt. Park on Saturday, was expected to settle the question of three-year-old supremacy between Two’s Loose and Sandusky, but instead of this the success of Refund further complicated matters, and now the issue looks more open than ever. J. R. M'Kenzie Driver: In future the Addington trainer, G. M'Kendry, will be first horseman to Mr. J. R. M’Kenzies’s big team of trotters and pacers. McKendry has considerable experience, and has always been regarded as a capable and reliable horseman. He drove Refund excellent races when Mr. M‘Kenzie’-s colt won the Seaview Handicap at New Brighton, and also the Wellington Stakes at Hutt Park. Decoy Bird: At one stage of his career Decoy Bird gave indications of proving a good pacer, but his form over a period has been poor, and it has been decided to give him an opportunity as a trotter, at which gait he shapes quite fairly, although he will have to make further headway before he can be considered as a good proposition.
