O’Grady Cup MARIST LOSE TO HORNBY. Poor football > was seen at the Wingham Park yesterday when Marist and Hornby played the first, game for the O’Grady Cup, the visitors winning by 18 points to 9. Combination was lacking on both sides, and the game was spoiled by too much kicking and hanging on. Oustanding backs for Marist were Pollock and Hopkins both of whom defended well and kicked with precision. T. Anisy was another useful link in the back line whilst, A. Beban who made a welcome reappearance after being out. for most of the season on account of injuries, played a splendid attacking game. Calder led the forwards in his usual polished style, receiving splendid support from Pearson and P. Grogan. M. Standeven, the visiting full-back was less safe than Pollock, but he gave a fine display of positional play and cut through on a number of occasions. His passing was well directed. E. Hendry was in good form on the wing and C. Kenworthy proved to be a reliable half. The forwards were an even lot none being outstanding.
The teams were:— Marist: Pollock; Morel,-Anisy, Devonport; P. O’Brien, A. Beben; Hopkins; Calder, Grogan, Afleck, Pearson, W. Gilbert, S, Knapp. Hornby: W. Sandeven; K. Bannan, R. Timms, E. Henday; W. Dunn. C. Taylor; C. Kenworthy; W. Vivian, J, Airey, W. Woodgate, J. Foster, F. McKenzie, J. Loyd. Hornby won the toss and Marist kicked off with a light drizzle behind them. Knapp early broke away with Calder, and Anisy in. support, but could not touch down before the ball went over the dead ball line. Grogan a good run to hand to Calder, a subsequent pass to Devonport was not taken. The ball came from a loose forward rush to Devonport who passed to A. Beban for the latter to cut in past three players to score near the posts. Beban failed to goal—Marist 3, Hornby 0. A clever back passing movement saw Pearson secure to send Anisy over for a try. Calder failed to goal—Marist 6, Hornby 0. Marist were penalised on their 25 yards line and Hendry goaled with a fine kick—Marist 6, Hornby 2. Hornby had the' better of the ensuing play, but excellent defence by the! Marist. backs, Hopkins and Pollock kept them out. Half time sounded with no alteration in the score.
Soon after the resumption Marist made a breakaway when Anisy sent to Knapp who scored near the corner flag. Devonport failed with the kick—Marist 9, Hornby 2. Hendry secured near the centre of the field and beat Anisy and O’Brien to score near the corner. His kick at goal failed—Marist 9, Hornby 5. Hornby attacked strongly but were unable to score until Bannan cut through the opposition to score well out. Hendry failed with the kick—Marist 9, Hornby S. Marist were penalised for offside play and Hendry missed a difficult kick. After Hornby had maintained pressure on Marists’ line for some minutes, Kenworthy dived over for a try under the posts, but failed to goal—Marist 9, Hornby 11. Bad handling lost certain tries for Hornby, who were definitely on top. Hendry potted a fine goal from outside the 25 to make the score Marist 9, Hornby 13. The game in the concluding stages became more or less a farce. Just on time Hornby scored when Timms dived over and Kenworthy converted, the game ending. Hornby 18, Marist 9. Mr. J. Griffen refereed. Hornby fifth grade defeated Marist by 22 points to 21 in an evenly curtain-raiser. Mr. R. Taylor refereed. BRADSHAW CUP. WON BY BLACKBALL.
