A tale of a terrible jourrigg,. 400 miles from the interior of Papua to the coast, with a companion seriously ill, has reached Sydney. Jack Hides and David Lyell were leading an exploring expedition in Papua, when Lyell fell ill. Hides decided to dash for the coast down the Fly River. He had practically to carry Lyell for a considerable distance. The party was attacked by beri-beri, five natives dying. Twenty-two others suffering from the disease were helpless. Hides took the risk of rafting the party through a gorge and ran into a tidal bore. He lost a canoe and everything in it, and almost lost their lives. The remainder of the journey was made under terrible conditions. Lyell is in a critical condition.
