REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent], REEFTON, September 17. Mrs Mangos, of Lyell, who is in Reefton Hospital, is showing considerable improvement, and is expected to be able to leave the institution in a few days. There was a very large attendance at the Fire Brigade’s 500 tournament last evening, and a most enjoyable time was spent by all attending. The ladies’ prizes were won by Mrs Russell and Mrs Newcombe, and the men’s by Mr J. Lockington and Mr R. Cairns. The novelty prizes went to Mrs Eklund and Mr O. Collins, and the lucky box of chocolates to Mrs Cereseto. The members of the Buller delegation to Reefton yesterday, when at the Inangahua Junction, inspected the railway bridge which is being built over the Buller river, also the railway works. They state that good progress is being made with both works, but a considerable amount of construction is still required to connect both ends of the line.

Thirty delegates from Buller local bodies, Progress League, and business interests visited Reefton and discussed district matters with Inangahua representatives, Messrs F. W. Archer, F. Seawright, W. S. Clarke, G. B. McInroe, W. Clayton, and other residents. Mr Archer said the Gorge railway had identified their mutual interests, and Mr J. C. Brown commended the co-operative spirit displayed. The Lewis Pass road was destined to promote their interests. Mr J. Kilkenny (Mayor of Westport) said Inangahua people had always lent Buller their support in district matters, and when the railway and road operated, their starved districts were destined to prosper in an unprecedented manner. Messrs D. Archer, Simpson, E. R. Fox, A. A. Wilson (Buller), W. Clayton, W. J. Morris, W. Blackadder, F. Seawright, G. B. Mclnroe, W. J. Humphries, J. B. Discaciati, J. McElwee, ana W. S. Clarke (Inangahua) also spoke on district matters. It was finally resolved to urge the preparation and sealing of the highway between Reefton and Westport for its full length.
