Rosehill Races GOLD ROD, TALKING AND AJAX WIN. McCARTEN’S SUCCESS. [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received September 19, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, September 19. Three favourites, Gold Rod, Ajax and Talking shone at Rosehill races on Saturday. The weather was hot and gusty. Gold Rod won the Camellia Stakes in a manner fairly satisfying his Ep-

som supporters. Although hard pressed by Hamurah, he came away in the last hundred yards to win by two lengths. Francis Drake, having his first outing since his arrival from New Zealand ran only moderately, as did Country Party and Genetout, while King’s Head greatly disappointed. Arabia, on the other hand, threatened serious danger. z Ajax A who fulfilled expectations up to the nilt to beat the strong finishing Caesar by two lengths in the Guineas, gave his backers a thrill at the top of the straight, where Caesar caught him, but the challenge was short-liv-ed. The Victorian colt retrieved the lead and was going right away at the finish. He is bound to monopolise attention in Melbourne Cup discussions. The Spring Handicap was won by Gay Knight, but this afforded no guide to the Metropolitan Handicap, owing to the muddling pace.

The Hill Stakes was won all the way by Talking. He revealed good quality. The Victorian, Avenger, who came from a long way back to finish second, was full of running. Avenger, according to turf critics, looks to have a strong claim on the A.J.C. Derby. The New Zealanaer, Courtcraft, who finished sixth, ran a fair race, and is expected to improve.

A romance of St. Constant’s win in the second division of the Highweight Handicap, was that Alan Cooper, early this month, sold St. Constant to J. Cook for twenty shillings, “because he was fed up with him.” The Victorian colt, Hua, was given an exhibition gallop, with Silver Standard, after the Guineas. The large crowd were greatly interested in the Victorian crack, who won by about

half a length over a mile and a quarter. The stewards inquired into trouble at the barrier in the Hill Stakes. Avenger, Only One, Courtcraft and Allunga met with serious interference. Allung ’s rump was damaged by contact with the rails. The New Zealand jockey, Atkins, told the stewards that Courtcraft .vas hampered by Allunga. The stewards found it impossible to say who was at fault. The “Sunday Sun” states Mr Cooper intends to send Talking and Mala to the United States in the event of winning the Epsom and Metropolitan double. His objective will be the Santa Anita Handicap, of one hundred dollars. Results were:—

2 Hurdle Race; —Euphorbus 10.7 . (Sholl) 1; Hands Up 9.4 (Young) 2; i Australian Bee 9.9 (Stanton) 3. Thirtl teen started. One length each way. Time 2.421. Talking held a commanding lead over the whole distance, and won by 21 lengths, with half a length between second and third. Allunga, Sarcherie and Courtcraft finished in that order. Gay Blonde was last. Time 1.391. The New Zealander Aiwai, finished seventh in the first division of the Highweight Handicap, which was won impressively by Beaupre, from Shakespeare. Stalin was unplaced in the second division, which was won by St. Constant, from The Mohican and Royal Step. MELBOURNE RACING. MELBOURNE, September 19. At. Mentone Races, yesterday, the Mentone Jubilee Cup resulted: —Balkan Prince 8.11 (Brown) 1; Manolive, 8.13 (Cox) 2; Lady Kooringal, 6.7 (E. Cox) 3. Sixteen started, including Prince Quex, Jack Horner and International. Won by two and a -half lengths; three-quarters of a length. Prince Quex was fourth, Jack Horner. sixth, and International seventh. Time, 2.7. Bellevue, Elanage, and Silver Bond were unplaced in the Yarraman Handicap. Red Manfred was unplaced in the second division of the Dandenong Welter Handicap. Greenhorn and Glenlonan were unplaced in the first division of the Newry Purse. KNOX SUSPENDED. SYDNEY, September 19. The prominent jockey, A. Knox, was suspended for the month by the stewards at the Cowra Country Meetingyesterday. No reason was given. Knox will thus miss important spring engagements.
