KARAMEA PORT
REOPENED AT LAST.
WESTPORT, September 14
The Karamea river has been restored by a flood to its old route, and ths port for the first time since the 1929 quake is navigable once more. The quake caused the mouth to silt up rapidly, and in a short time the former channel to the se* became blocked and water began to flow south into the Otamahana lagoon. The river bottom rose near Karamea, so that floods inundated the town and also Market Cross.
The flood during the past few days removed the silt and caused the scheme of river direction to become effective.
Until last week-end, the river had been free from floods for a long period, and the construction of the stop banks and a training wall on the north side has been pushed forward with ail speed. On Sunday, the flood cut a channel to the sea through the old mouth a mile north of where it has been flowing into the Otamohane lagoon. The new channel has a depth of 12 feet at high tide. The river is now navigable by coastal vessels of the size that previously traded to Karamea.
