From the early hours to-day a strong southwesterly wind has prevailed, accompanied by hail and rain, somewhat abating this afternoon. Mr M Fogarty, late of Dunedin, has been appointed manager here of Spiers’ radio dealers branch. He has had considerable experience in the radio trade in the Dunedin district. In the local basketball competition, the second round has closed, the result being:—Koiterangi and Old Girls A each 28 points, School A 23, bt. At the monthly meeting of the Westland, Hokitika R.S.A., Messrs V . E Brown (President), K. Paterson (Secretary), W. Eastgate, W. Cropp, F Millen A. Samson, F. McGregor, L Childs, C. Hart, P. R- Whfiford G A. King, T. Lynch and T. Stuart attended. The president referred to the matter of a returned soldier who had made interjections during Mr Justice Northcroft’s speech at the last re union. It was decided to obtain an apology from the soldier and that failing this, he be debarred from all future functions of the local R.S.A. The Town Clerk, Hokitika, wrote regarding the ventilation of the Soldiers Hall, and requested some better system be adopted.—lt was decided to reply that improvements of ventila-

tion is at present under consideration, and will be given effect as soon as a report on the suggested improvement is obtained. Headquarters advised particulars of the proposed trip of exservicemen to Sydney for the 150 tn anniversary of New South Wales, and stating that the quota of men from Hokitika is ten. Ross Presbyterian Church forwarded a cheque for £2 12s lOd being a collection obtained at a combined service at Waiho on Anzac Day It was decided to send a letter of thanks for the donation and to devote the sum to the War Graves Fund. It was decided to make a grant of one guinea to the Ross War Memorial Fund. The Weheka representative (Mr J. G. McMillan) forwarded suggestions for a reunion when the new hall is completed. It was left to the President and Secretary to make the necessary arrangements. The N.Z. RS A. advised that the War Funds Council had made a national grant nt £BOO 10s for the relief of distress, the Hokitika proportion being £2 10s. The Canteen’s Funds grants May, June and July amounted to £3,000, £8 of i which is allocated to Hokitika. At the 31st July, the National membership stood at 11,359 financial members, Hokitika being 12th on the list, with a membership of 214. The Kumara sub-branch forwarded its balance sheet for the year ending March 31st, 1937. Accounts amounting to LU) 2d were passed for payment. The Westland Hospital Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs T. W. Duff (chairman), A. R. Elcock, E. W. Heenan, W. Jamieson, J. A. Murdocn, N Brown, E. L, Park, W. H. Evenden R Dale. An apology was received from H. T. Parry. The Medical Superintendent’s report stated: Remaining in hospital, July 31st, o 5; admitted during month of August, 63; treated during the month, 118; dischaiged during month, 67; remaining in hospital. August 31st, 51. The flnuncu statement showed receipts £1609 19s 2d expenditure £1394 6s 3d. Accounts amounting to £1337 0s 6d were passed for payment. Arising out of the House Committee’s report, it was decided to carry on the old visiting hours, with the addition of Friday night. Also to proceed with the laying down of the new staff tennis courts. The appointment of Frederick Clausen as junior office assistant was confirmed. The chairman was appointed to visit Kumare, to confer with tne Association with regard to a resident medical officer. It was resolved to call tenders for six months’ supply of nsh, meat and bread for the hospital; also for the erection of a morgue at the institution. Tenders to be dealt with by town members. Mr F. Freitas wrote offering to rent garage. It was decided to accept offer in meantime at 6d per week, and to offer same, with sections, for sale, by tenner. Nurse J G Fowler forwarded her resignation as maternity nurse.—Accepted with regret. Miss I. Meachlim was appointed. Miss G. M. Mitchell, masseuse wrote resigning her position on the staff.— Accepted with regret. M. McGeorge was appointed for one month, the position to be advertised. The Matron’s report for August stated: The highest number of beds on any day was 57; lowest 48; average for the month 54.2; number of X-rays 52; operations 44; screenings 1; massage and electrical treatment 194. Resignations, Nurse Lindop, to take effect as from September 16th; Nurse I V. Clausen, to take effect as from September Bth. It was asked that the Board finalise the laying down of the Nurses’ tennis court. Sister Gillespie will be commencing duties as Tutor Sister as from September Ist. W. Jeffries and Co. report on the Arahura fat stock sale, held yesterday: The total yarding comprised 97 head, and was of exceptional quality. A full range of buyers was in attendance, and the sale throughout was keen, prices being on a par to a slight 1 rise, compared with the sale a fortnight ago. We quote an average price for prime quality heifers and bulocks at £2 per 1001 b, Our entry of 65 head was sold as follows: For E. A. and F. W.
