“ff the top half of a mountain could be suddenly cut off it would tend to rise again,” declared Dr. K. E. Bullen, lecturer in mathematics at the Auckland University College, in an address to the Auckland Astronomical Society thc other night. He said that., likewise if a sulliciently great weight were placed on it, it would sink to an appropriate level. It could be shown mathematically, however, that the earth could not possess a mountain exceeding about six miles in height nor an ocean exceeding six miles in depth. Thus, Mount Everest was close to the maximum height thcorretically possible.

A cold southerly change which set in on Monday, continued yesterday, when temperatures were down to winter level. Early yesterday morning a severe thunderstorm, accompanied by vivid lightning passed over Greymouth, but no damage is reported. The rainfall for the 24 hours to 9 a.m., yesterday was 103 points, but during the day only moderate showers were experienced. Gardens which have come on well during the recent spell of warm spring weather, have been damaged by the heavy rain, which otherwise was a relief to industry on the West Coast. The heavy showers averted the possibility of a shortage of water for power purposes, particularly in Westland Power Ltd’s area, where the long dry spell was causing serious concern. Dredging operations, which also had been carried on under difficulties, will now have ample water available, for the fall in the higher country was considerable. Snow has fallen on the ranges, and the Arthur’s Pass road had a coating of several inches yesterday morning.
Just back from “Blighty” he blew in to see his old pal, the tobacconist. Soon they were talking of old times. Presently he said: “Is the New Zealand tobacco I remember so well still to the fore?” “How long have you been away?” queried the tobacconist, Twelve years, and believe me I’ve travelled some since then!' “Why yes,” said the tobacconist, “toasted’s” going stronger than ever! in fact the live blends, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold are reckoned best sellers.’ “My hat. Let’s have a pound of my old favourite, Cut Plug No. 10,” said the returned wanderer, “I’ve never found its equal.” "It has no equal, if you ask me,” said the tobacconist, “it’s in a class by itself, it’s toasted. Why the manufacturers, the National Tobacco Company, now own works covering four acres. They’re running a really important industry.” “Good on them! At that rate they’re helping to keep New Zealand on the map!” ‘they sure are!” said the tobacconist, ana with a hearty hand-grip they parted. ,
