REEFTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. REEFTON, September 11. The Reefton district school’s annual plain and fancy dress ball at the Criterion Theatre was a wonderful success in every way. The attendance was a record, and the display of fancy costumes was easily the largest and most varied ever seen in the district, some of these being particularly attractive and some very grotesque and clever. The children held the floor until a late hour, and then the adults took their place. The supper was lavishly served and greatly enjoyed. The music for the dances was supplied by the Royal Dance Band, and was very good indeed. The judges for the evening were Mesdames Turner, Hayes, Archer, Discaciati and Miss Arnott, and their task was by no means an easy one. Characters represented as follows were awarded prizes:—Jack Wilson Mexican boy, Colin Hannah, Cuddle and her Rider, Nordica Miller Powder Puff, Allan King Red Indian, Olwen Wells Powder Puff, Valrie Hindmarsh Victorian Lady, Ron Finlay Absent Minded Professor, Ray Robbins Aspro, Mavis Blom, Early 90’s, D. The result was the election of Mr F. Thompson as vice-president, and of Mr J. Reid as caretaker. For the first-mentioned office, the voting was: Mr F. Thompson 107 (Waiuta 82, Big River 11, Reefton 14); Mr E. Chandler 72 (Waiuta 47, Big River 10, Reefton 15). In the other ballot. Mr Reid received 88 votes, and Mr F. Dean 86.

Rain began on Saturday, and showers to-day continued, a considerable amount of rain falling. It should end the drought that has "prevailed for some time, and allow the restarting of mining operations that have been held up for want of water. At Big River the dams were filled, and crushing has been resumed. Mr C. Nevin, who has been on a brief business visit to Christchurch, returned by Saturday evening's train. ! The wedding took place on Friday evening at the local Methodist Church between Cecil, son of Mr and Mrs Bennett, of Seddonville, and Mia Doreen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Austin, Shiel Street, Reefton. Rev. Mr Dickens performed the ceremony. Miss Jean Bennett officiated at the organ. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, was attired in white needle-run lace over white satin, and silver sandals, her veil held in place by a coronet of white lons. She carried a bouquet of white freesias, abutillons, heather and maidenhair fern, with silver streamers. The bridesmaid was Miss Pearl Martin, of Westport, wearing a dress ol almond green crepe-backed satin, with coronet of yellow jonquils, and carrying a sheaf of daffodils. Mr Thomas Baird, of Reefton, was best man. After the ceremony, a reception attended by over 60 guests was held in the supper room of the Pacific Lodge, where the guests were received bv Mrs Austin, who was wearing a black tailored costume relieved with white hat and accessories to match; and by Mrs Bennett, who wore a black tailored coat with black hat relieved with a touch of white. The happy couple left later by car for Westport, the bride wearing a grey tailored costume, hat and accessories to match. The funeral of the late Mr Henry Leggoe, of Ikamatua, took place yesterday afternoon, when there was a very large attendance from all parts of the Inangahua and Grey Valleys and Waiuta, and the procession included members of the Robert Burns and the Druids’ Lodges. The service at the graveside was read by the Rev. C. E. Dickens, of the Methodist Church. Bro. E. Baird conducted the Druids’ rites, and Bro. C. Mori those of Burns Lodge. Many floral tributes received bore testimony to the respect in which deceased was held.
