[Our Own Correspondent]. The Whist Drive held in the Taylorville School last Saturday evening, was won by Mr. T. Nimmo, and Mrs. Dando was second. Mr. and Mrs. Murchie, of Ashburton, arrived on Saturday evening and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. Rutherford, Dobson. Mrs. J. Pender, of Taylorville, has left on a holiday visit to Auckland. Despite heavy rain on Saturday night, the Wallsend Hall was packed for the children’s fancy dress ball organised by the Brunner Old Boys’ Association. All children under 16 years were admitted free. Miss Watson supplied the music. Mr. W. Carse was M.C. The hall was prettily decorated with coloured streamers. Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Bush, of Greymouth, judged the fancy costumes and awarded the prizes as follows: Best fancy dressed girl (Folly), E. McDonald; Best fancy dressed boy (Pilot, Cook Strait Airways), W. Hoggarth. Most original girl (An apple a Day), M. Mclntosh; Most original boy (Boxer Louis), J. Dando. Best fancy dress, under 7 years: Alma Willis, Waiuta, (Madame Pompadour); Best fancy dress, under seven years, for boys: Ralph Rotheran (A Chip off the Auld Block). Cheapest Costume, girls: (Bride’s Cake), Rena Bell; boys, (Knock Out), Royce Kerr. Best Poster Costume, girl: (Brasso), Rose Mooney; boy (Evening Star), Russell Eder. Best costume under three years: (Kewpie), Marjory Rothera; Best fancy pair, 18th. Century Couple, June Coutts and Alan McPhie. The “Glaxo Babies,” Misses Jean Fentimen and Roberta McNeish, were awarded special prizes by the judges. Mr. and Mrs. A. Mclntosh, were awarded a prize for the largest family (7), in fancy costumes. A Lucky Spot “One Step” was won by Colleen and Brian Creagh, and lucky seats were won by Hazel Rothera (girls) and D. Gibson (boys). Mr. W. Carse (President, 8.0.8. A.), presented Miss Watson and Mr. and Mrs. Bush with a gift each as a slight token of the Association’s appreciation of their services. Mr. Bush suitably responded.
