BABY CAR’S COLLAPSE. [Per Press Association], CHRISTCHURCH, September 12. Serious head injuries were suffered by James McCarthy, of 366 Yaldhurst road, when a baby car in which he was being driven overturned on the Main West road near Yaldhurst this morning. There were three other men in the car, and they escaped with a severe shaking and minor abrasions. J. McCarthy has been head man for Mr J. B. Pearson (trainer) for the past 20 years. FISHERMEN’S ESCAPE. NEW PLYMOUTH, September 13. A miraculous escape from death was experienced by two New Plvmouth fishermen. A. E. Interman and J. Goodwin, when the launch Sicily was wrecked in a westerly gale on the Waitara Beach early this morning- , . , The launch, which caused anxiety by its non-return to New Plymouth yesterday, was heading for port, last night. When about four miles off Waitara, a particularly heavy sea was shipped, which swept the bulwarks and all loose fittings away, and tangled the anchor rope about the propellor. While the rope was being cleared, a second sea was shipped, which tore the engine from its frame and took away the rudder. The helpless craft was swept in towards the shore, narrowly missing destruction on the Waitara river mole, and was carried broadside through the breakers to the only sandy piece of beach in the vicinity. She was beached at 1.30 p.m.

ANOTHER SHOOTING ACCIDENT. WHANGAREI, September 13. A serious shooting accident occurred on Sunday. Roy Percival Carson, single, linesman, employed by the Post and Telegraph Department, Kaitaia, was taken to the hospital, with a bullet in the head. Carson was riding in a motor car driven by Cecil Maxwell, telegraphist, Kaitaia. He alighted to take from the car a rifle, which was dismantled, the stock being wrapped in an overcoat. The barrell slipped on to the road. Apparently, there was a cartridge in the breach, which contact with the road, caused to explode. The bullet passed through Carson’s arm, entered the face just under the nose, and lodged in the head. Hopes are held out for his recovery.
