[Per Press Association]. AUCKLAND, September 11. It is announced that the closing date for the receipt of applications for tenancies of 212 State rental houses in course of erection at Orakei has been extended until further notice. Applications closed last month, and it is explained that the reason for the extension is the delay caused by the weather and the recent carpenters’ strike, and the Under-Secre-tary of Housing (Mr. J. A. Lee) wishes to give everyone the fullest opportunity of applying. Mr. G. S. Ellis, branch manager of the State Advances Corporation, said to-day that there were over 1500 peopie seeking houses either at Orakei or on the Cadman and Casey CHRISTCHURCH, September 11. Burglars were busy in the city last night, when two shops and a petrol station office were entered, and a sum of nearly £3O was taken. The premises of Eastmond’s Shoe Store in 135, Worcester Street, near Manchester Street, were broken into, and a sum of approximately £3O was removed from a cash register at the back of the shop. The stocks were left, untouched, and no damage was done to the fittings. Entry was gained through the main door in Worcester Street, the plate glass having been broken, while the lock was left intact. The shop was closed for the night at 9.10 p.m. and the burglary was not discovered until the shop was opened at nine o’clock this morning. The second shop, the property of Mr. James T. Tavener, a chemist, at 680 a, Colombo Street, was also entered, but. no money was taken.
