There was a large attendance of members. Mr Wilson, president ol the Canterbury body, and Mr C. G. Curtis, representative of the Buller branch on the Association, were also present. Mr Wilson congratulated the Buller branch on its good showing during the past year, with 121 members now on the books, and paid a fine tribute to the work of Lh° =°eretary, Mr F. Clarke, to whom most of the credit for the branch’s line position was due. He anticipated that the executive would approve of a patrol officer being placed on the West Coast during the busy traffic period for four months from November to February. He could assist greatly in encouraging motorists to become members, etc., and could help generally in the operation of the Association. The Lewis Pass road, Mr Wilson considered. would be of great benefit to Canterbury and the Coast, especially the Buller section, and he could visualise a great influx ol visitors to Westport as a result of its completion. In Christchurch, every man who owns a car is looking forwards to coming over the Pass.
The president said that he had noted a great improvement in the Buller roads since his last visit some four years ago, and mentioned that Mr Pickles, patrol officer, was arranging to place 120 signs in this district. The election of officers resulted as follows: — Chairman: Mr F. H. Morgan. Vice-chairman: Mr Geo. Taylor. Executive: Town members—Messrs J H. Harkness, R. H. Betts, L. Powick, F. S. Wood, J. W. Curtis. O. L. Nahr, E. Skilton. Country members-■ Messrs Mosely (Waimangaroa), L. Peacock (Denniston), L. Carmine (Granity), W. Duncan (Karamea), A. Prosser’ (Millerton). Delegate to Central Council. Mi C. G. Curtis (Christchurch). Secretary and treasurer: Mr F. Clarke. . , Mr C. G. Curtis, in outlining the activities of the Association, explained the method of nominee membership. The Association has had to attend to 818 break-down cases last year at a total cost of £382, or 9s 4d a job. During the year, 24,000 miles had been patrolled by the Association’s officers, 665 members had been signed up, 805 signs had been erected, and 220 car owners had been assisted on the road.
It was decided to ask the Canterbury Executive to investigate the excessive cost of petrol in Westport. It was pointed out that the price ol petrol in Westport was almost od higher than in Christchurch. • PRESIDENT’S REPORT. ! The president reported as follows: — The Association’s membership was fairly well maintained through the years of depression, and we have pleasure in recording an increase in new members from the country. Members realise the benefits obtained from participating in cheap car insurance and the 15 per cent, bonus on the amount of premiunis paid. The roads, bridges, and crossings in
this district are being repaired and graded under the supervision of, the County Engineer, Mr C. F. Schadick, and the Public Works Department, namely, a new footbridge and traffic bridge over the Orowaiti river, the overhead bridge at the railway crossing at Waimangaroa. Parking of motor vehicles in Palmerston Street, close to intersections, namely, in front of the Post Office and Lynch’s, obstructing the view when pedestrians are proceeding over the painted crossing, should be generally disallowed; cars when so parked obstruct the view from seeing oncoming cars. This is a very busy intersection. Thirty feet is the distance allowed from a crossing. The Lewis Pass road was opened to permit traffic for several days before and after the Springbok-All Black second Test match in Christchurch. Now that this road is almost completed for general use, we would be pleased to see the road from Westport to the crossroads and from Inangahua Junction to Reefton tar-sealed.
