SUDDEN DEATH. MARTON, March 1. Ann Jones, 62, spinster residing with her brother Frederick Jones, labou er Tarakina was found dead in her bedroom yesterday. She was apparently all right when her brother left heme, a few hours earlier. WOMEN IN PARLIAMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, March 1. The National Council of Women, in their annual conference to-day, carried an Auckland remit to delete from the constitution of the national policy the following passage: “The National Council of Women may support, but not initiate, the candidature of suitable women approved by the Council for Parliament. ’ ’ TARANAKI OIL. For many years it has been the custom of the Education Department to grant bursaries to home science students on recommendation. This year there are
39 applications. On Monday, intimation was received that owing to the largo number granted last year, only ten would be granted. So far, no application set forward by the University Council has been refused, so that when it appeared that the number of students was too great for the present hostel, the Council leased Sir J. Allen’s house, spent a considerable sum on equipping it and appointed additional staff. Moreover the students were to be in Dunerin from all over the Dominion next Friday, and the large majority turned down must have received notice of the refusal of a bursary on the evening of their departure. BROTHERS’ ILL LUCK. PAHIATUA, March 1. Walter Dick, 22, son of James Dick, Ngaturi, broke a leg above the ankle in a motor cycle collision, and was admitted to the hospital. A younger brother is also in the hospital, as the result of a serious accident with a slasher ou Saturday. METHODIST MISSION. AUCKLAND, March 1. Al th' annual meeting of the Board of the Methodist Foreign Mission, Nurse Edna White and Miss McDonald were accepted for work in the Solomons, and will leave about June. It was decided to request the Conference to appoint the, Bev. Mr. Seotter secretary and Mr. J. W. Court lay-treasurer to represent the New Zealand Church at the semi-Jubilce celebrations at the Solomon Islands next August. The following officers were elected.—Rev.
