COUNCIL* DECISIONS. AUCKLAND, February 21. The Elections Committee recommended to the New Zealand University Coun cil this morning that the system of proportional representation be given a further trial, and that tile method of country votes be that on the third schedule of Legislative Council, 1914. but that the voters be requested to arrange in order of preference the whole of the candidates. The Committee further recommended that the same system be adopted for (a) the election of members of the Aca domic Board by the professionals; (b) the election of members of I Diversity I Entrance Board by principal of the schools. The recommendations were adopted. Mr. A. E. Flower gave notice of motion that the University Entrance Board be requested to consider the whole subject of the matriculation and entrance scholarship examinations, with reference to (1) standard. (2) syllabus, (3) system of marking and (4) accrediting by means of leaving certificates, and to forward its recommendations <o the University Council through 1 the Academic Board. FURTHER COUNCIL DECISIG IS. AUCKLAND, February 21. At the meeting of the New Zealand University Council, a proposal by the late Board of Studies that the terms examinations for exempted students should be eliminated, was adopted. It Was explained that these students would still have to keep terms, although they Would not sit for terms examinations.
Another proposal that physiology Should be removed from the matriculation examination, was approved; but another that agriculture should be also cut out was referred to the Academic Board.
Mr. F. Milner, speaking as a Head master, said the matriculation examina tion should be a test in fundamental sul jects onlv. However, there was likely tc be an outcry in the press if agrieultur. were cut out. The matter would be re considered.
It was decided to recommend the Education Department to amend the Bursary Regulations so that not more than five Bursa ries might be, awarded yearly at each University College to students showing ability. 1 It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Council at Christchurch, beginning of February 15th., In subsequent years meetings will be held in January. DEGREES GRANTED. It was resolved to grant the following degrees:—Mus. D.S., Kenneth Phillips; Ph. D. G. H. Cunningham amt J. R. Hosting; B. Med. Science, N. L. Edson. Mr. T. K. Sidey gave notice to move that the question of whether the Council should be empowered to grant degrees in Theology bo referred for consideration and report to the committee. The following motion was earned: “That power shall be given to the Coun cil to determine from time to trm whether the offices of Principal ami Vice-Chancellor shall or shall not b held by one and same person, and tha. n„. Government be asked to amend i.c cordingly.
