PREFERENCE POLICY.

MEAT CONTRACTS FOR ARGENTINE. LONDON, Feb. 18. Apropos of the Admiralty inviting tenders fur a million pounds uf canned meat, Mr Hassan, Australian Meat Council’s representative, states that unless concerted action is taken, the naval contract, like the army, may be lost to Europe.- The questions in tiie Commons only resulted in the Secretary of War supporting the Director of Army Contracts, and indicating the Government’s policy to continue giving the Dominions the cold shoulder. The Minister admitted that he did not know if the Government’s fair wages and conditions clauses was imposed upon the Argentine producers. The fact that there were only two tenders from the Dominions for the lost contract was evidence that the meat producers were being gradually eliminated from the field, owing to their inability to compete with the paralysing odds, the result of production served by native lat our. PUSHING BRITISH SALES. LONDON. Feb. 18. Important steps are being taken, aiming at expansion in Britain and the Dominions in the way of trade in British manufactures, and increasingly awakening the potentialities of the Australian market, and in the sale of Dominion produce at Home. The Empire Marketing Board is intensifying its campaign. It has established a .Liverpool office where fruit experts are in touch with retailers and Dominion producers, and investigate the questions of packing and quality. It is understood that branches will be opened at other ports, with a view to facilitating- marketing and advertisement.

The Federation of British Industries, meantime, is co-operating with the Australian Association of British manufacturers, to organise a Melbourne Exhibition as part of the campaign. TlLwill be held in February, March and

April, in 1928. The Federation hopes that 250 manufacturers will participate, showing all classes of goods, except motors.
