Messrs W. J. Butler (Hokitika) and I). Tennent, left on Saturday for Christchurch. A cable from London records the death of Sir Frederick Greene, the founder of the Orient Shipping Line. Lady Hoare (says a London cable) has been appointed :i Dame of the British Empire. I A London cable records that a knight hood has been conferred on Dr. Henry Head, the physician. Sir P. C’lnliffe Lister (says a cable from London) has appointed Lord Huntingfield as his his Parliamentary Private Secretary. Sir Francis Aglen (late Supervisor ot Chinesee Customs, who recently resigned) has been awarded the Grand Cross of St. Alichaei (says a Londort cable). Mrs I‘. O’Neill, accompanied by Miss M. O’Neill, ieturned by Saturday’s express, after a holiday visit to Christchurch. Rev. F. Rule, Superintendent of Presbyterian Social Works, arrived ou Saturday, and is the guest of the Rev. T. N. Cut tie. Mr. C. Prime, Organiser for the Canterbury; Employers’ Association arrived on Saturday’, and will represent the employers in the Arbitration Court proceedings this week on the West Coast. Air E. C. Sutcliffe, Organising Secretary in Canterbury for the N.Z. Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners, arrived on Saturday’ in order to submit to-day the application of the Greymouth Union for the extension of the Dominion award in their industry to the We st Coast. It is pleasing to note the success of another Grey district native in the person of Air John (“Gordon”) L. Sexton, son < f Mr and Airs Sexton of Cobden. and formerly’ of the local railways workshof s staff. Air Sexton, who is at present on the staff of the railway workshops at Newmarket, Auckland, and whose apprenticeship was chiefly served under Air Pullin here, has beer, selected by the Railway Department to g > to Canada for further special training. and to gain experience of the methods there established, after which he will return and resume his work on ♦ho Dominion railways. Air Sexton is tn be congratulated upon his selection for such a mission, which denotes the possession of exceptional ability. The funeral of the late Air John Joseph Greaney, which took place yesterday. was one of the largest that has been seen in Grey’mouth for years, showing the esteem in which the deseased was held by every class of the community. Members of the Hibernion Society (of which deceased was a memI 1»er) attended in "force and acted as pall bearers. Among those present were the ( hairman. Air D. Baybutt, and members, Engineer and Clerk of the Grey’ County Council; the Mayor (Air W. H. Parfitt), members and Clerk of the Greymouth Borough Council: members of the Grey’ Hospital Board, the late Air Grpaney having been at different times members of those bodies. There were also members of various other organisations to which deceased had belonged, and visitors were present from various localities in other parts of the West Coast. The last rites of the Catholic Church were conducted at St. Patrick’s Church and at the grave by’ the Rev. Father Holohan, assisted by’ the Rev. Father Kilgour. Visitors to Christchurch stay at Stonehurst Private Hotel, Latimer Square. Three minutes’ walk from shopping area and all theatres. The popular’ house for West Coast visitors.
