MELBOURNE v. TARANAKI. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 18. The cricket mrttch Melbourne v. Taranaki commenced to-day in fine weather on a good wicket and outfield. Kingstone won the toss and elected to bat. Warwick Armstrong captained the visitors. Lash and Naismith opened, the former taking first strike to Ransford, Ebeling bowling at the other end. Naismith scored freely. At 21 Lash was caught left-handed by Armstrong off Ebeling. 21/1/5.
Monaghan followed. Both played confidently. At 38, Wood relieved Ebeling, and Naismith drove him to the boundary, bringing 40 up for 50 minutes play. The score at 12.50 was 100 for one wicket, Naismith being 73 and Monoghan 18. LATER. Taranaki made 259, including a fine innings by Naismith (94), and Monaghan (60). MACARTNEY TESTIMONIAL MATCH. SYDNEY, February 18. The testimonial cricket match to Slacartney between the Australian (deven which toured England and the 'Rest of Australia commenced at the. cricket ground to-day in ideal conditions. The Rest won the toss, and batted first. They made 305. Morgan made 89, Kippax 100, and V. Richardson 36. Tn the bowling, Gregory took 2 for 50 ? Everett 3 for 49, and Mailey 2 for 99. Australia made 49 for no wickets. Ponsford scored 23 and Woodfull 22. The Morgan-Kippax partnership put on 151 for the second wicket, and rattled up runs in brilliant style from all the bowlers. The attendance was over two thousand.
