MILITARISM.
Executions Needed. TO MAKE IT WORK. (Reed. Feb. 15 at 8.50 .p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 15. In an exclusive interview with a British United Press M. Painleve discusses extracts published in London from Mr Winston Churchill’s book, ‘‘The World Crisis.” M. Painleve said: Mr Churchill states that entire French regiments revolted in June of 1917, and that they started to march to Paris; but, in-reality, there only was a vague tendency that way. There certainly were spasmodic refusals to return to the ranks, and vehement demands for leave; but, in order to re duce the painful events to their true importance it is only necessary to recall that the discipline was entirely reestablished after five weeks. Unhappily, Marshal Petain was obliged to authorise twenty-three executions, but it should be remembered that there was a# army of four million men and a front of no less than -two hundred miles at stake.”
