Cromer, out of whose sides the sea has just bitten' another huge mouthful, was, a century ago, the despair of engineers. After each inroad attempts to protect the coast were made — unavailingly. Nof a modern seawall offers substantial resistence to the waves. At one time Cromer' was included in the parishf of Shipden ; but that town itself is 'but a memory. It disappeared under the foam one wild winter day, in the reign of Henry VI. It is said * that keen-sighted visitors to Cromer may still see, at low water, -a K'ttle way* from the shore, the ruins of the churches and cottages that formerly stood Iby the margin of the sea.
