AN ALLEGED GO^lBljSE.

; . +; ■■■—'■ •';" THE SUGAR TRADE.

At the Chamber of Commerce meeting, last night, Mr Felix Campbell referred to the sugar trade in New Zealand, and to the advent of the Sugar Company, which he alleged had made an arrangement with four or t five wholesale commercial houses in the Dominion to come into force on Ist May under which the company will not allow any bonus (or, discount) i to outsiders except lor a purchase to the value of ,£SOO, for which a bonus of 2 per cent is "allowed, for £1500, a bonus of ,3$ per cent, and for £2,---000 a bonus of 4 per cent. Such purchases are of course beyond the means of the small trader, and to most traders such large buying- is prohibitive with the result that the public who pay the piper are compelled to contribute- to the, four or five commercial houses mentioned, -21- per cent upon the entire gross consumption of sugar in, the Dominion. -If the public can eet .no redress, then the ria'ter should be brought before Parliament. Mt Campbell therefore moved: '"That this Chamber condemns the ■tactics of the Suar Company in entering into an arrangement with n. few commercial houses in New Zealand, to the detriment of the publ : c." Seconded ,by Mr Kettle and carried unanimously.
