The exit of the bookmaker has al-' ready resulted beneficially to the Masterton Club from a financial stand point. At \the iredent tnjeejting- the amount put through the totalisator. showed an increase of £5,564, compared with the meeting in March, 1910, when the bookers were in existence. The totalisator receipts at the March meeting in 1910 totalled £7,072, and at the same meeting" in I 1911 £12,636. The bookmakers' fees at the 1910 meeting came to £252, this 3*ear they are nil. The^Club's ten per cent, at the March, 1910, meeting, came to £707; this year it was :£lt,'2S3. The tf&venue of the club • from the autumn meeting, last year amounted to £959, while this year it came to £1,623, an increase of £304. ' . The Otago Daily Times states that Messrs Thompson and Co., aerated water manufacturers, wrote to the City Council the other night offeringto present to the city two drinking places — a cup for individuals arid a trough for. horses — at their premises in Crawford Street, and to- supply them with artesian water. Further, they offered to erect and maintain both, and to take all precautions in • the way of disinfecting them. This generous offer was warmly applauded by the Council. The Mayor remarked that the offer was. a splendid, one. "In a city like Dunedin," he continued, "where we have a number of wealthy firms and wealthy people residing, I consider that some of them have been ivery lax in makinggifts to the city.. This generous offer from Messrs Thompson and Co., may be a means of urging- some of our rich residents , to do better in the future. I have my eye on one at present," added his Worship, " and I believe the time is coming when he will do something-, for our city."
