Considerable interest was evinced in a beautiful pair of antlers in Hokitika by a number who,. were given an opportunity by the courtesy of Detective Campbell, to examine them at the Police Station. The head is that of a red deer, and it was found on Saturday (last at Ktaneiri .Lake by three residents of Upper Kokatahi, Messrs J. G. Meharry, Pochard Mulholland and Carl Karnbach. The discovery was made on the eastern • shore of the lake, the finders taking the head from the carcase and bringing it over Ford's Creek to Kokatahi, where it attracted general interest. On the police learning of the find, Constable Evenden,' , in accordance with the game protection regulation was sent to take possession of the head, and brought it to Hokitika, where it now will probably become the property of the Acclimitisation Society. The antlers, in which are ten points, are splendid specimens have a spread of about three feet, and being most symmetrical throughout. It is considered that the age of the deer would be between nine and ten years, and if, as is probable, the animal to which the head belonged, was one .of those . some nine years ago in this district, it affords tangible proof that our back country is. eminently suitable for such game, and equal in this respect to. any part of -New -.Zealand.-^— W.
