PAPER MILLS DESTROYED
DUNEDIN, April 12. A fire occurred in the -New Zealand Paper Mills Co's premises at Woodhaugh, this evening, resulting in ♦lie. total destruction of the building •3ud plant and stock ■ The origin of the fire is unknown. The fire had a strong hold when discovered, and employees had tc iash from the building. The building" cavers about half an acre and the ' plant was modern and efficient. The building was valued at £6000 and plant at from £12,000 to £73,000. On the premises there was. manufactured stock, valued at £3,000 and raw material .£-2000, and a stock of chemicals and dyes to the value . of £1100. Insurance on building and stock is £12,500, distributed over the Standard, National, Commercial, ■ Union, Royal, Alliance, South British, and London and Lancashire offices. Over ififty hands will be . thrown ! idle. • A fire in Bath Street to-night, in the premises of Joyce Bros., and the .Textile -Bag and Sack Co., did much damage. It is supposed that the fire was caused .by fluff coming in contact with a candle. The damage will probably • exceed £3,500. Thi property was insured in 'he Queensland Office^ but the amount is unki own.
