FIRE ON THT DEFENDER.
HOKITIKA. April 12.
At nine o'clock yesterday morning while the steamer Defender was lying in the Grey roadstead, a fire occurred in the forward hold among the general cargo. The hose extinguished the fire in a few minutes. The damage is not expected to be serious. The steamer arrived at Hokitika this morning and her cargo is 'being discharged. . The actual damage has not yet been ascertained, but it is small.;
