KAIAPOI IN A GALE.
STOR-MYi PASSAGE FROM NEWCASTLE.
After a stormy passage of eight days from Newcastle, the Union Com pany's collier Kaiapoi arrived in the stream at Lyttelton early on Saturday morning, and after being granted pratique, was berthed at the Glad stone Pier.. As was expected, the Kaiapoi received" a rough handling in the heavy south-westerly gale, which delayed the Mokoia on her way to Hobart, and wrought damage to the Maheno while . crossing the Tasman Sea. With a full cargo of coal, the Kaiapoi left "Newcastle at 6.45 a.m on Friday, March 31st, and immediately she cleared the Nobbys she ran into a hard southerly gale and high seas. Heavy rain squalls helped to maJce matters very unpleasant on board the deeply-laden collier which was shipping big seas fore and aft, her decks being 1 continually awash. .The weather grew rapidly. w"orse, and the steamer had to heave-to until the gale moderated on Monday last. Thereafter moderate southerly winds winds and .considerable sea were experienced until the Kaiapoi made the New Zealand coast on Thursday | night. Stephen Island was passed at 5.35 a.m arid Cape Campbell at 15.45 p.m on Friday and the vessel anchored in Lyttelton Harbour at 4.30 a.m on Saturday. A remarkable feature of the passage was the action of the barometer, -which was falling when the vessel left Newcastle, and which ranged from 29.40 to 29.30 all the way across until the vessel passed Cape Campbtell, .when it rose to 29.60 with a fresh south- | erlv wind.
