THE MAYORALTY.

[to the editor. ] Sir, — Tne announcement that Mr R Nancarrow is a candidate for the civic chair must, I am sure, have occasioned n<> little surprise. That a young, good-look-ing, hut still unmarried man, and who has never sat in the Council, should aspire to the position of Mayor of an important town, is not only amuaing, but so opposed to the fitness of things, that it is to be hoped Mr Nancarrow will not persist in making himself and the burgesses the subject of ridicule. An old writer thus describes what a Mayor ought to be — "Ymr Mayor ought to be a man big and comely, stately and well-spoken ; his voice great, his carriage majestical, his nature hauuhty. .and his purse plentiful and heavy." Sir, weltorTE wanta Mayor with the down on his cheeks, and to whom the Council can have no opportunity of presenting a silver' cradle. Give us a Hamilton, a Moss, a Kennedy, but best of all a Glenn, to satisfactorily fill the Mayoral office, but save us from young bachelors. By-the-bye, talking about Mr Glenn, why does not that bright and shining light present himself for election 1 lam sure that if the impression left upon the minds of the ratepayers by the wonderful manner in which he supported the dignity of the chair, is as vivid as that left upon the memory of Sir James Fergusson, there can be no doubt of the result. Yours, &c, Cms. Greymouth, November, 25.
