CHRISTMAS SPORTS.

SATURDAY. The annual Christmas sports held on the Camp Reserve were commenced on Boxing Day, and, as they were not finished, will be continued on Wednesday next. During the morning and forenoon heavy showers of rain fell, but about .11 a.m. the weather changed, and the sun shone out brilliantly for the rest of the day ; but while it was fine overhead, it was nothing but a marsh under foot. The Stewards decided to go on with the sports, but they had' .nothing prepared ; no stakes or ropes provided for the ring or other preparations made, and even supposing the weather had been 1 fine much: time must have been lost, and consequent disappointment to the visitors in town : and the general public. The early part' of the proceedings was a beautiful piece . of mismanagement, and it was only through the exertions of. the Secretary: and a few of the Stewards that things; were, at, last brought into some sort of : ) shape. There were very few visitors on the ground in the forenoon, but in the afternoon, when the band arrived, there i was a very ,large concourse, principally: consisting of townspeople, and the various events were witnessed with, much interest. The entries were numerous for the, different events, and the running and jumping was very good, considering the marshy state of the ground, which in some places was nothing but pools of water. The following are the results : — One Hundred Yards Handicap Foot Race— First prize, L 5; second- do, L 2; entrance,' 2s 6d. Richard Long ... .... ..'. ... 1 Edward Long .. ... 2 The following was the handicap :—F. Martin, scratch ; E. Long, 4 yards ; R. Long, 5 yards ; D. Twohill, 4 yards ; Joe. Heaphy, 2 yards, M. Doras, 2 yards; F. N. Jones, 2 yards, H. Corbett, 6 yards ; T. 'Coy, 6 yards ; F. C. Cochrane, 5 yards; A. Scott, t yards ; S. Clarke, 6 yards ; J. Carroll, 5 yards , J. Hayes, 4 yards ; W. Heaphy, 6 yards; P. Jaraieson, 10 yards ; Doney, T yards. 1 There were to be five entries or no race, but the result showed that there were eighteen entries, and as they could not all run at once on such a limited course with fairness, they were despatched in three lots, so that there were three good race 3 instead of one. The entries were :— E. Long, R. Long, D. Twohill, J. Heaphy, M. Dornan, F. N. Jones, W. Corbetr, T. Coy, T. Cochrane, D. Cochrane, A. Scott, James Clarke, Fraser Martin, Edward Carroll, Jahn Hayes, W. Heaphy, Thomas Jainieson, and M. Doney. The running was hotly contested, but the runners were very much impeded by the crowd that pressed in upfonthem. Running High Leap—First prize, L 3 ; second do, LI ; entrance, 2s 6d. D; Twohill .. 1 Joe Heaphy ... ... .. ... 2 Three entries or no race, but there ;

were eight entries for this event—Messrs D. Twohill, M. Donovan, Joe Heaphy, E. Long, Jas. Maloney, J. Clarke, M. Nelly. After some very good jumping, as good as could be expected on the sloppy ground, the declared winners were D. Twohill and Joe Heaphy. The wresiling, Cornish style, did not come off, as there were only two entries. Quarter-mile Handicap Hurdle Race— First prize, L 8; second do, L 3 ; third do, LI; entrance, ss. ■■ J. N. MichaerO'Connor (35ft Bin) ; '.. "' ... 1 Maurice O'Connor (34ft 3ih) _: !^ ... ... 2 There were eleven entries, and too much interest was taken in the game, for the crowd pressed in upon the players, and did not give them a fair chance. The result was. as. above. ; As by this time it was getting dark, the rem aining ■ advertised sports were postponed to Wednesday next.
