The following is an extract from a telegram sent by Dr Featherston to the Minister of Immigration, showing the list of immigrant ships and the number of souls shipped fiom the United Kingdom for New Zealand, durinfifthe month of October :— Dilharee, 370 ; Warwick, 240 ; ! Inverene, 200 ; Berar, 350 ; Humboldt, 390 ; Galbraith, 140 ; Nelson, 320 ; Wild Deer, 300 ; Acheron, 200 ; Anglesey, 270 ; Avalanche, 320 ; Lady Jocelyn, 530 ; Waimate, 370. Total, 4010 souls. Dtjnedin, Nov. 19. Hawthorn, Rector of the High School is dangerously ill, and but slight hopes of his recovery are entertained. He i 8 suffering from inflammation of the lungs. Criminal proceedings are commenced against M'Tlroy, of Christchurch, re Comet case. R. B. Martin swore he never authorised the accused to act as his agent. 8 p.m. Mr M'llroy, of Christchurch, has cotncommenced an action against R. B. Martin, of Dunedin, for L2OOO damages for defamation of character. There are also several lawsuits pending in connection with the Comet case, in which it is proved that M'llroy own«jd the Comet at the time of the alleged fraud. The ship Auckland has 360 immigrants, all well. Larrikinism is very rife, and five boys have been charged with larceny this week. . The " Guardian," referring io Bowen's appointment, says it will excite surprise | and not a little indignation. He was I only known before as a Resident Magistrate, and speaking of his connection with Governor Bowen, says that what influence was exerted by his astute relative to bring about the appointment will probably never be. known. Seeing that Yogel was in Victoria, it is sufficient to justify the suspicion that the Premier has been cajoled by the blandishment of Victoria's Governor. It warns the Government to be cautious, and concludes thus : — The acquisition of Mr Bowen as Minister of Justice will entail the loss of some of the many supporters of. the Ministry, and another such mistake would be fatal. Auckland, Nov. 19. The immigrants per ship Hydaspes were indignant at the release of the saloon passengers last night, and have broken out in open rebellion. The authorities are at the Quarantine Station and havd refused to allow the removal of the passengers' luggage. As the luggage is wanted by some going South, the difficulty is rather curious, and is causing much annoyance.
