The thanks of this community are certainly due to the Hon. the Superintendent of Westland for the manner in which he, in his place in the Legislative Council, maintained the claims of Greymouth to the vote of JIO,OOO for the improvement of the harbor. A contemporary remarks ■>n this snbject : — Referring to the expenditure of the £10,000 for the Greymouth and Brunner works, Mr Bonar is reported to have said in the Legislative Council, during the debate on the Railway Bill, that it was a serious loss to the Colony at large if the expenditure which had been entered upon were not continued. The main object of the expenditure was to continue the harbor works there, the completion of which would enable the Colony to enjoy a plentiful supply of coal. There were new mines being opened up every day, and unless the port were improved so that large vessels could enter, they would inflict, or rather perpetuate, a very heavy loss upon the Colony. He should exceedingly regret any action of the Legislature which would prevent these works being carried on.
