Melbourne.— The "Argus" of the 21st inst. reports : — ... . "In the import market business generally shows little improvement, but a considerable tiade has been done in one or two staples specially affected by English advices. Breadstuffs are firm, but that ia all that can be said, though supplies are on a very moderate scale. Bakers' lots of flour are selling at Ll3 15s, bags returned. Parcels cannot be quoted over Ll3 2s 6d to LI 3 ss. We have no special business to refer to, but as holders are' not pressing sales, quotations have some degree of firmness. Of wheat, no transactions outside the auction mart have been effected ; buyers, however, evince no particular indisposition to purchase, but there is very little offering to operate in. Under the hammer a few lots were cleared off ; best samples (about 240 bags) realised 6s 3d to 63 4£d, and inferior was sold at 5s lOd. Oats are very iiuiet and neglected, notwithstanding that' the supplies coming forward are so small. Nothing was offered at the auction sale in the forenoon. On the other hand dealers appear: to have no desire to treat for any at the present moment. Quotations for feeding rule at 4s 9d to ss, while milling are steady at 5s 3d. Maize is selling at 4s lOd in fair arcels Dundee goods have been more noticed, and sales to-day hare been made at 10s 4-kl to 10s 3d. Several parcels have been disposed of. . A line of 70 bales woolpacks has also chonged hands at 3s 4d. There js little trade demand experienced, and) '.he improvement referred to is owing to the tact that the idea of a duty is beginning to assume a more definite shape in the minds of 1 buyers, but the thing, after all, is a mere matter of surmise, la teas we note the; quittance of a few hundred packages old \ congous at lOd to lid. Sugars are moving j in fair lines, yellows being in good request, j We learn of the quittance of 100G bags Mau-i ritius. and 500 bags Java, at up to L32.jj Hops are still in favor. We hear of 60 bales; Tasmanian having been placed at up to 16dj for fine outside brands. An extensive busi- | ness, has been done in tobacco, chiefly in twists ; 250 and 180 quarter-tierces, various brands^have been taken up an advance on the price at which small lots ' would be sold last week. 400 packages Nenus and Two Seas , tens have also changed hands, and sales of Raven and St. A.ndrew twist,i in qr-tierces, and cases, were likewise amongst the business reported. Offers have, moreover, been made to clear out parcels on the spot, aud all advised to arrive of these brands till the close of the year, at the improvement referred to. The origin of this movement is attributed to the receipt of a London telegram, stating that the market in Virginia had advanced to double thefprioe ruling in February, in consequence of receipts of the last crop growing deficient, and the weather for the growing crops being very unfavorable. The rise is reported to be equal to be 6d per lb on leaf. .
