The half-yearly meeting of shareholders of the National Insurauce Company was held to-day. About 150 shareholders were present. The report and balancesheet were adopted, and after a discussion it was resolved that a dividend of five per cent, for the half-year be declared.

Proposals have been laid before the Provincial Oouticilfor the construction of several new brauch lines of railway.

The construction of the lines already authorised and those now proposed will cost abou t half a million.

The Superintendent proposed to apply to the General Assembly at next session for authority to raise a loan riot' exceeding L 500,000, for the construction of those works ; land to be set aside as special security for such loan.

The Margaret Galbraith, eleventh wool ship of the season, clears out of Port Chalmers, for London, with a cargo valued at L 54,289. She takes wheat and flour to the value of L 5219.
