[ANGLO-AUSTRALIAN PRESS TELEGRAPH AGENCY.]

Christchurch, May 13,

The adjourned licensing meeting was held yesterday. The renewed license of the Dunedin Club Hotel was refused, as it had no public lodging accommodation. Edward Dunley, the applicant, had only recently purchased the goodwill of the house, and had spent several hundred pounds in renovating it.

A petition signed by 592 persons, including justices of the peace, merchants, bankers, &c, has been presented to the Court, praying them to reconsider their former decision in refusing a renewal of license to Tattersall's Horse Repository, but the Court declined to do ao. Great sympathy is felt for the proprietor cf Tattersall's who had promised to provide good public accommadation if his license had been granted.

The nominated system . of immigration continues to be largely availed of by settlers.

Owing to reports circulated as to the character of immigrants by the ship Asia, many of them cannot obtain employment. Mr Reid has stated that the reports were exaggerated ; . most of the immigrants being of a very good description. 1 Some of the single girl 3, however, have been sent back to the barracks because they are found to be useless as servants and un-

civil to their employers. It is thought it is clear that 33 single girls had been sent out either from a reformatory or workhouse.
