THE Grey River Argus PUBLISHED DAILY FRIDAY, MAY 8, 1874.
Mr Robert Young, C.E., who is now engaged with his staff in examining the country from which it is proposed to raise a water supply for the Napoleon district, has made a most important discovery with respect to the Randall Creek line. The great objection to Randall Creek as a source of supply has hitherto been the existence of reach of a lowlying country between Randall Creek and Napoleon. Former surveyors and other explorers have all reported that the expense of taking the water either by means of flumes or syphons over the depression would be so great that it would not be advisable to make such a, large outlay in securing the quantity of water Randall Creek contains. The fluming required to cross this gulch wa3 variously estimated at from a mile to a mile and a half in length, and for the greater portion of the distance the boxes would be fixed at an elevation of over 150 ft. Mr Young has discovered a place where he can cross this valley with 35 cliaius of fluming ; and more important still, he has learner! that the water in the left fork of the Allenwater, a tributary of the Grey River, can be introduced into the Randall Creek race near this point at a comparatively trifling expense when the increased quantity of the water to be obtained is considered. The discovery of this narrow pass will lessen the cost of construction of the Randall Creek race, should it ever be made, oy nearly £10,000, so that the money now being Bpent in making the preliminary examination is well laid out. Sir Young will finish his explorations and make hia report in about six weeks from the present date
