REEFING NEWS.

(kkom the inangahda herald of saturday.]

Wealth of Nations.— Several men were engaged during the latter end of the week sending down a quantity of "rubble from around the outcrop of the reef at the upper part of the spur, through the pass, for the purpose of filling in the old workings, and by such work having been immediately attended to when "necessary, a good deal of subsequent labor will have been saved. There is a large body of quartz exposed at the hill side above referred to, and from its formation will evidently require care and judgment to raise it. Every precaution is being taken to keep the lower ground thoroughly secure, which will enable this work to be successfully accomplished. In respect to the other working everything appears to be going on with the usual progress, and the average quantity of stone is coming from the mine. Golden Ledge.— The prospects of the mine are very favorable, and a number of desirable works are being accomplished on the outer part of the mine as well as Bteady progress made underground. The northern drive has now been taken in along the reef a distance of about 50ft, and the present appearance of the face shows nearly 4ft of a very solid body of quartz, and maintaining the same prospect referred to in former reports. Energetic— The operations at the company s coal-mine is about the only item worthy of mention this week. Since the last report the tunnel has been driven about 20ft, and as anticipated the, seam of coal presents an excellent appearance. There are now fully 6ft in the face, and the seam is getting thicker and improving m quality every set, the quantity already taken out necessitates the construction of a temporary paddock for stacking it. United Golden Race.— The contractors expect to complete their work in about a fortnight, and at present there is no particular indication of the reef being close to hand. They have encountered a few scattered veins of quartz but nothing further ; and from the testimony of those who were connected with the workings of the claim at the time the correct bearings of the reef were given by the surveyor, the company are under the impression that it will be necessary to drive fifty or sixty feet further after the present contract is completed before the stone will be struck. , T , ]l . e AJax.— During the last week the reef m this company's mine has opened out to a splendid thickness, there being nearly seven feet of stone where the present workings are carried ou, and accordt ing to the quantity contained in the paddock to-day there is every livelihood of the machine starting again early next week.
