IS MR. CURTIS A VAMPER OR A VAMPIRE ?
[to the editor.] Sir— A question of considerable annoyance has cropped up again amongst the electors of Cobden, relative to a statement made by Mr Boaae at a public meeting during his candidature for a seat in the Nelson Provincial Council. He was asked by an elector whether, if returned, he would work in harmony, with Mr Curtis 1 He replied, no. That he (Mr Curtis) was ! a vampire, or a vamper. Would your reporter be kind enough to decide which of the two words was used, and set this question at rest for ever 1 Apologising for trespassing on your space, I am, &c, Fiji. Cobden, February 20. [We understand from our reporter, that Mr Boase desig-nated, Mr Curtis as a " vamper," not g ' vampire." The dictionary, gives two meanings to the word "vamp," one of which is "to advance, to go, to travel ;" but we hardly think that Mr Boase intended to accuse Mr Curtis in this sense. The other interpretation of "vamp" is "to piece as an old thing wiih a new part ; to repair." We suppose this is what Mr Boase meant— that Mr Curtis proposed to patch up the Province with a new policy.— Ed. G. B. A.]
