The Yarra and the Surprise, schooners, coal laden, bound for Sydney, were both, wrecked on the north beach early this - morning. The crew of the Yarra came 3 safely ashore in their boats, but 'the crewi 1 of the Surprise had a narrow escape of their lives. The mortar apparatus missed the vessel, and the crew then took to their boat, which capsized in the heavy surf, . throwing the occupants, six in number, into the sea. With the assistance of those I trom the shore, five were at once picked up in an exhausted condition. The missing one, a boy, was found drifting along with the breakers, and with the assistance of Messrs Stokes and Holt was brought ashore in an almost lifeless state, but was ultimately brought round. Both vessels broke up within aa hour. The debris is strewed along the beach. West Maitland, Feb. 1. A man named Webster was drowned this morning in the flood water. The river is lowering fast.
