Nelson, Feb. 7. Crossman 99, Moore 95, and Burn 88, qualified for the Colonial firing.
The Council was prorogued to-day.
Major Gordon on his inspection complimented the City Artillery and Rifle Companies. He said when his report was sent in he believed a large reduction would take place in the force. Many of the sedentary volunteers would be made to resign.
Wellington, Feb. 7.
Whilst correspondence was proceeding between the General Government and Provincial Government of Wellington upon the subject of bridges, roads, and other works of the Appropriation Ordinance lately passed by the Provincial Council for the appropriation of about 50,000 on account of an anticipated loan, it was discovered that the Provincial Auditor had signed a warrant for the whole amount appropriated. This is likely to lead to his dismissal, and it is also probable that the Ordinance will be disallowed.
Auckland, Feb. 9.
Arrived, on Saturday evening— Waye Queen, ship, from London : 115 days out. Fifteen saloon and eighteen steerage passengers. .
The police have memorialised for increased pay.
During a gale the steamer Challenger was run into by the schooner Dauntless, which broke loose, and the steamer smashed against the wharf and sank, a complete wreck. The English barque Lauderdale broke from her moorings and smashed into the wharf several feet. The new schooner Couralee had her stern completely smashed off. The cutter Aaron and several cargo boats were sunk. The steamer Devonport had her paddle-boxes smashed, and the schooners Dauntless, Gemine, and other vessels had their bulwarks much damaged. The ship Chile broke away from the wharf, but her anchors pulled her up. A yacht sunk off North Head, but the four occupants were rescued.
Dr Philson reported all well on board the Wave Queen, but the gale was too severe for the Customs boat to return.
The Wave Queen came up the harbor yesterday all right. The steamer Challenger is completely smashed up, and a cutter sank on the top of her. The wall of Masefield's foundry was smashed in, also the roof of a cottage. The damage done altogether is estimated at LIO,OOO.
A seaman belonging to the Wave Queen, named Richard Knott, was drowned in endeavoring to rescue the nrow of *i lfi cutter Challenge. George Arnoff, one of the Challenger's crew was also drowned. Several others are reported drowned. The Gross reckons up the separate losses, making a total of L 12,390. Mr Moriarty, Sydney Government Engineer, proceeds to Greymouth to report on harbor works there. The damage to shipping has been overestimated. It is not thought to exceed L6OOO. It is expected four more lives were lost. Wellington, Feb. 9. Messrs Yogel and Richardson were passengers to Nelson last night in the Luna.
