The argument regarding the William Tapscott prisoners was continued to-day. The annual report of the New Zealand Institute shows that during the past five years 445 communications, have been read before different bodies incorporated with the Institute, and 286 printed at length in the -Institute's transactions. : The members of the Institute number 563. Captain Moresby, R.N., lectured on New Guinea. In the House, to-day, there was a long discussion whether the number, functions, and salaries of Ministers should' be decided by the House. The Premier suggested pensions for Ministers. Eventually the House went into Committee to consider an address to the Governor, asking him to send down a measure increasing the salaries of Ministers, and a resolution to that effect was carried. Christchurch, Sept. 22. The immigrants by the Punjaub have been quarantined. ' Rees, a Dunedin man, has won the handicap flat race. The barque Schiehallion very narrowly escaped wreck yesterday^ Fox want 3 Harris to make another running match over hurdles. Grahamstown, Sept. 22. James and David Sampson have been arrested for specimen stealing and remanded. Auckland, Sept. 22. O ver 80,000 National Insurance shares have been applied for.
